Year 2. Getting on & falling out

Getting on and Falling out. Autumn 2. 2009.
We have had a super 1st half of the Autumn Term and now we are really looking forward to all the wonderful things we will be doing in the 2nd half.
We will have Eid and Christmas to celebrate together and we will work together to help raise money for Children in Need and also for Macmillan, a cancer charity.
We are going to be reading lots of different versions of the traditional tale, Cinderella, and we will especially enjoy the version with a boy for the main character, Prince Cinders. Continuing our theme of traditional tales, we will go to the pantomine in Harrogate to see Aladdin!
This terms theme is all about 'Getting on and falling out' and 'Anti Bullying.' We will continue to work on following our important school rules - remembering that they will also help us to be kind to each other and keep each other safe.
We welcome family and friends to come and join us on our exciting Learning journey, and if you can't come into visit us, you might like to follow our blog, which we will be beginning to write this half of term.

Vincent Van Gogh.
Together we read the story, "Camille and the sunflowers," which tell how Vincent Van Gogh was bullied by people because he liked to do something different. He liked to paint and not everyone liked his painting, and some made unkind comments to him and even laughed at his work. We talked about how other people made him feel, but that the kindness of Camille and his family will have made him feel happier. We all enjoyed painting some beautiful flowers and also working with oil pastels. We showed our pictures to each other and we made sure that we appreciated each others work and used positive language to talk to each other about our works of art. We noticed that when we said positive things about some ones work to them it made them smile and they looked proud and happy.

Cinderella transforms into a beautiful Christmas Fairy!
We enjoyed reading various versions of the Cinderella story, and similar stories from around the world. We especially enjoyed the story 'Prince Cinders', which is a very similar story, but about a boy who has three mean brothers. We all wrote our own versions after we had drawn some brilliant story boards and used them to help us tell the story to each other.

While we were all learning about Cinderella we made Cinderella dolls from recycled thread bobbins and deposable wooden spoons. All the materials we used for the dresses also came from Scrap - the recycling centre in Leeds, but by the time we had made them they looked really lovely. As it got nearer Christmas we decided to transform them into angels by adding golden wings and crowns!
We also made snow men from yoghurt drink cartons, using are knowlegde of 3D shapes to help us make a smart top hat for him.

Aladdin.
We went to see the pantomine, 'Aladdin,' at the theatre in Harrogate. Back at school we all learned how to sew and we made little magic carpets to help us retell the story.

Getting on and falling out. Autumn 2. 2008
Now we are starting the second half of the Autumn term, and we have so much to look forward to. We will have Eid and Christmas celebrations to enjoy, and days like Children in Need.
Our theme for this half of term is "Getting on and falling out", and we will also be having a school focus for two weeks on "Anti Bullying."
We are all now really trying to follow the new school rules, and everyone is Aiming High!

This is our new planner for this half of term... you can see what an exciting time we are going to have, and how much learning we will be doing.
In Literacy we are going to be reading lots of different versions of Cinderella, some from different countries and some were the main character is a boy.
We will be thinking about the different characters and how their behaviour makes the other people in the story feel.
What would have happened if the ugly sisters had come to Hovingham and followed our rules and learned to consider and repect everyone?
We will continue to do lots of our learning in pairs or small groups.... helping and explaining our learning to each other.

Times tables.
We have been very busy learning our 2x, 5x and 10 x tables.
We had lots of fun making posters with Kit Kats for our 2 times tables, and posters with hand cut out shapes for our 5 x tables. We know some great action songs for each of the tables and we can practise our tables and number bonds in Target Times each morning.

Divali.

Mrs Rehal shared with us all the story of Rama and Sita and told us about how she enjoys Divali with her family.
To celebrate Divali we all made divas and instead of putting real candles in them, we put little flickering tea lights that had tiny batteries in them.
We did circle time by the light of our twinkling divas and Mrs Rehal shared indian sweets with us all.

Firework pictures.
Together we talked about keeping safe at Halloween and Bonfire night.
In ICT we have been learning how to use Revelation Natural Art. We learnt how to use the fill tool to colour the background and how to use the shape tool, increasing and decreasing the number of sides. We also used the fan brush to help us create our firework pictures.

Magic at Target Time!
Each morning starts with Target Time, when we all work towards our targets. We read, practise handwriting, spellings, and do number bonds and tables.
We now have some large magic white sheets, which Mrs Fisher gives to different children each day, and they can do their work on them, and then just like magic they can be put up on our working walls, and they don't even need blu tac! The next morning we clean them, and some one else gets a turn at showing their work on the working wall! What's really magical is that the more we work on them, the smarter we become!

Cinderella.

We have read the story Cinderella, and we all felt very sorry for her when her two step-sisters bullied her, but we enjoyed the happy ending when she married the prince. Next we read the story about Prince Cinders who was bullied by his two big, hairy brothers. We have all made our own Cinderella dolls and soon we are going to make dolls for a character in our own stories.
Look at the wonderful dolls we have made, and read the super sentences we have written. When we wrote our sentences we remembered to think, say, write and check each sentence. We checked that we had used a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence and for any proper nouns. Using our word webs we tried to put two ideas together to make the sentence interesting. Adjectives were used to describe some of the nouns and to make sure we were writing really super sentences. Finally we made sure we didn't forget the full stop at the end of the sentence!

Snowman comes to join Year 2.

Today Mrs Fisher, Mrs Poole and Mrs Rehal managed to brave the snow and got to school. How ever many staff were snowed in their homes and the roads around Yorkshire were very dangerous, so school had to close. Just before the closure was announced on the radio we spotted this snowman waiting in the playground. He had his book bag with him and he had been practising his numberbonds and was wearing his numicon buttons to help him. What a shame the school was closed and he had to go home.......

The next day when we came to school, the snowman had melted a bit, but magically another little snow person had appeared in the playground!
Later in the week, when the snow had all gone, 2 Red recieved a Christmas card and it was signed from BOB the SNOWMAN! We were all very excited, and he also sent us a magical bauble with a picture of him, a crystal snowflake and some magic dust in it. He asked us to tell him about what we enjoyed at school, so we have made him some posters about some of the things we have enjoyed in class this half of term.

Magical spells with litres, kilograms and metres!
We have been learning about measuring the capacity of containers and have been pouring water in measuring jugs and looking at the capacity of squash bottles, shampoo bottles and milk and juice containers.
We used kitchen scales, balance scales and bathroom scales to find out the weight of lots of things. We weighed out bags of sweets and fruit and veg in grams and kilograms.
We used our rulers to measure the length of items and drew lines of different lengths in centimetres.
When we had learned all these different ways of measuring we made magical spells....... we used a litre of ..... a kilogram of ..... a metre of ..... and a millilitre of.... a gram of .... and a centimetre of...

This very magical spell gives you a nice time at school!

Our Friendship Wall.
We used Crayola clay to make tiles. we put our initials on one tiles and made a picture on the other. We looked at how the tiles looked interesting on their own, and how every tile had similar features, but also how each tile was different and unique. We then put the tiles together to make our Friendship Wall. We saw that together the tiles looked really amazing.

Christmas Maths.

In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. For our Christmas cards we made some amazing trees that were a triangle that changed into a triangular based pyramid! We cut out a card triangle which had 4 equal sized triangles marked on it. We folded along the lines and then decorated 3 of the triangles like christmas trees and glued the 4th triangle to a card base. String was threaded through the card and the triangles corners and when we pulled the string the flat triangle changed into a tree in the shape of a pyramid! We decorated round the tree with more 2D shapes!
We also decorated the class room with paper chains.... but our paper chains were a special numberline chain. We worked in groups and everyone in the group used 10 strips the same colour. The strips were numbered from 1-10 and then linked in order, but the last link was left open. Each group them joined their 10's together! We strung them up and counted in 10s all the way to 300!
Our banner made for Eid was decorated with presents made in the shape of cuboids and then bauble numbers to 20.

Christmas gifts.
We made calendars to take home with a picture of the whole class standing by the tree in the hall and we used the skills we had learned when we made our Cinderella dolls to make a doll of our own choice. We made Princes, Ugly Sisters, and lots of Magic Fairies!
We finished the term off with a very special party and a visit from Santa!
